3 Ways to Track Your Gas Mileage Using Twitter

by Bryan McDonald

image Twitter is a very useful social network and micro-blogging service.  But it has many uses other than micro-blogging.  One of the many things you can do with Twitter is track your gas mileage.  As a Real Estate appraiser, I am on the road every day.  As a small business owner and independent contractor, it is very important that I track my mileage.

Here are three free ways to track your gas mileage using twitter.  All you need is a twitter account.

1) MyMileMarker

image Signing up is easy to do and best of all it is free.

Step 1:  Enter your email address, pick a password, and enter your twitter username.

Step 2:  Go to www.twitter.com/mymm and follow MyMileMarker.

Step 3:  Send MyMileMarker a direct message on twitter.  Send your odometer reading (miles), how many gallons you filled up your car with (gallons), and the price per gallon (price).

Your tweet would look like this:

That’s all there is to it.  Once you start using mymilemarker, you can view charts of your distance traveled over time and compare it to your fuel economy.  They also have a mobile site you can view on your mobile phone.  The mobile site can be accessed at http://mymilemarker.com/m.  When you log in, you can enter your odometer reading, the number of gallons, and the price per gallon.

Keeping track of your fuel economy is an important step towards getting more miles per gallon.  I can see a difference in my fuel economy depending on where my appraisals are located and if I am mostly driving in the city or on the interstate.  Tracking your gas mileage is also a good way to help you see how much you are spending on gas each month.

What a clever use of Twitter! That’s a far better way to use it than to send out inane messages such as “New blog post soon!”
